Oh the glamour and prestige of being an entrepreneur! Setting your own hours, picking who you work with and who you don’t, running your own show…these are what a lot of us think of when we dream of the life of an entrepreneur. All you need to do is find that one big idea and you’re on your way. But take it from those who have gone before you: Being a successful entrepreneur is more about hard work and hanging in there than it is about big ideas or being smart.
“There are a lot of things that go into creating success. I don’t like to do just the things I like to do. I like to do things that cause the company to succeed. I don’t spend a lot of time doing my favorite activities.”
-Michael Dell, Founder of Dell Computer
Sometimes, what we want to do and what we should do are very different things. Nobody said the road to being a successful entrepreneur would be fun, but there are many who said it would be rewarding.
“If you just work on stuff that you like and you’re passionate about, you don’t have to have a master plan with how things will play out.”
–Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook
Passion for what you’re doing goes a long way. If you have passion, the roadmap for success doesn’t have to be perfect. Let that passion tell you where you need to go.
“I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.”
–Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple
There are plenty of good ideas, and plenty of smart people in this world. If that were enough, then there would be a lot more success stories. But there aren’t, because so many would-be entrepreneurs just weren’t able to hang in there.
“For all of the most important things, the timing always sucks. Waiting for a good time to quit your job? The stars will never align and the traffic lights of life will never all be green at the same time. The universe doesn’t conspire against you, but it doesn’t go out of its way to line up the pins either. Conditions are never perfect. “Someday” is a disease that will take your dreams to the grave with you. Pro and con lists are just as bad. If it’s important to you and you want to do it “eventually,” just do it and correct course along the way.”
–Timothy Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Work Week
There are a lot of seemingly good reasons you should wait to start on your entrepreneural journey. But these are usually just excuses. If you wait until you’ve got it all figured out, then you’re too late.
“Timing, perseverance, and ten years of trying will eventually make you look like an overnight success.”
– Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter
We all hear about these amazing success stories, especially in the digital world, that seem to come out of nowhere. What we don’t hear about are the time, effort, and hard work that are inevitably behind most of these success stories. You have to do the work if you want to hit the goal.
